Marc Schiller - Logistics Expert / CEO

Marc SchillerMarc is the Chief Executive of Shorter Cycles and is responsible for driving the evolution of the Shorter Cycles business model.

He is a former independent management consultant and former VP of marketing and strategy with UPS. Mr. Schiller has many years of experience in product management, product development, market strategy, competitive analysis, pricing strategy, and particular expertise in the execution of strategic market plans in field operations across a wide range of services in the domestic US market and global markets.

Marc has worked with clients affiliated with the US Postal Service and has additional expertise and experience working with international postal operators having managed efforts at UPS Europe to partner or JV with postal and private operators in the European market.

Marc has also consulted privately with clients in various other industries for several years.

Gordon Sumner - Military Markets & Operations Expert

Gordon SumnerBased on his many years of experience with the Federal Government, Dr. Sumner provides support to the Department of Defense, State and local governments and agencies with a focus on Guard/Reserve issues, operations and personal management, and strategic development, business development and Planning.  He assists corporations with problem solving at a macro-level.  As a professional educator/trainer, Dr. Sumner assists with training development. He also supports his clients by analyzing complex issues and developing high-level strategies which results in sound recommendations to resolve key, and sometimes, sensitive issues in a timely manner.

Dr. Sumner, a former member of the Senior Executive Service and Presidential Appointee, he recently served at the Deputy Asst. Secretary of Defense level as the Executive Director, National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (NCESGR) and principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense on all matters involving employer support programs for all the Reserve components of the United States Armed Forces including the Army National Guard, Air National Guard, Army Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and the Coast Guard Reserve.  He was responsible for budget administration, operational, administrative and logistical support for NCESGR, its staff and volunteer committees.  Dr. Sumner provided leadership and management for more than 250 military uniform and government civilians, defense contracted personnel, and over 4,900 volunteers organized into 54 field committees throughout the states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.   

His business experiences include serving as Managing Director, SY Technology during the acquisition of the company by L3 Communications, followed by the merger of SY Technology with Coleman Research Corporation into SY Coleman.  During this time he lead his Division with multi-million dollar contract wins plus a successful merger over a two-year period resulting in increased contracts and support to the Department of Defense.

A retired senior Army officer, Dr. Sumner served in a variety of command and staff positions including Infantry, Air Defense and Aviation within the United States and overseas.  A decorated combat veteran, Airborne, Ranger, Army Master Aviator, he served on the Army Science Board and was the Army’s representative to NATO’s Army Training Sub-Group.  In his last active duty assignment he served as the Chief, Institutional Training, G3/ODCSOPS, with overall responsibility for the Total Army’s Institutional Training base worldwide. 

 

Tom Northrop - HR Industry Expert

Tom NorthropAs a co-founder and partner Tom brings more than 20 years of business development experience to Shorter Cycles. His clients have included DuPont, Merck, Coors, Cargill, Tenneco, General Electric and the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Tom is also the co-founder and CEO of Human Capital Consulting and Publishing (HCCP).  HCCP has worked with TASC, Mantech, Lockheed Martin and a number of NGO's in the Capital region.

As a cultural geographer, Tom has taught courses in cultural geography, environmental science and human resource management at The University of Virginia, James Madison University and Mary Baldwin College.  

Tom is a former Officer in the US Army and served a Magistrate for the 25th Judicial District in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He is also the past State Vice-Chairman of the Virginia Employer Advisory Committee, a former board member of WTPF, ( a business forum for human resource professionals in the metro Washington D.C. area) and the past President of the Waynesboro/Augusta County Leaders for Tomorrow.

Tom holds certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) from the Human Resource Certification Institute. Tom is a former Track and cross country coach and an avid runner twice completing the Boston Marathon

 

Earl Rassmussen - Information Security Market Expert

Tom NorthropEarl Rasmussen, P.E., leads an advanced cyber-security company and provides strategic advice to innovative technology companies in the security and software assurance areas. He has over 30 years in the information technology and security areas involving cyber-security, technology integration and project management.

He was on the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering faculty at the U.S. Military Academy, technical adviser to the Dean and directed the Computing Research Facility; principle technical advisor to the Army’s Software Centers; and Chair of the Defense Working Group responsible for career development for Information Technology professionals in the Department of Defense.

Mr. Rasmussen has advised executives across multiple organizations in technology analysis and integration. He has conducted security assessments affecting large institutions, has been a subject matter expert and presented internationally on cyber-security and technology innovation.

Mr. Rasmussen holds a B.S. degree in Physics from US Military Academy West Point and a M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. He has Program Management and Information Technology certificates from the Department of Defense and is a licensed Professional Engineer.

 

Tom Northrop - Health Care Market Expert

Tom NorthropThomas Northrop, MHA, FACHE, is managing partner of NMG, Richmond, VA, providing strategic consulting to health providers, and assisting entrepreneurs in bringing healthcare innovations to market.

He has 25+ years experience leading, consulting with, and developing business for Hospitals, Health Systems, physicians and other businesses. He served as CEO of hospitals & multi-hospital alliances and as Business Development Executive for several firms. Northrop provided operational ‘turn-around’ consulting in revenue cycle, practice management, predictive analytics, supply chain, emergency & surgical services, and industrial medicine services for Fortune 500 firms.

Northrop received his BA from Lafayette College and MHA from Duke University, Fuqua School of Business. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and an Advanced Member of Hospital Financial Management Association-HFMA.

Earlier in his career Northrop was COO for Virginia Hospital/Healthcare Association’s for-profit Innovation Services subsidiary. From 2000 to 2004 he was CEO of the Augusta Health Network in Morgantown, WV. Northrop earlier served in other senior operational roles for Guilford Group in Baltimore, The Health Partnership, Premier Alliance, and individual hospitals in North Carolina and California.

 

Mike Borek - Market Strategy Expert

Mike BorekMike Borek brings over 15 years of experience in managing corporate branding, product marketing and business development functions in the enterprise technology and consulting sectors. 

Mike is the founder of Shorter Cycles and is responsible for increasing Shorter Cycles presence in key targeted markets and to innovate new product opportunities that leverage our significant automated contact optimization experience and expertise. During his career he has been responsible for crafting several sustained market niches in enterprise mobile integration, network operations management and has driven product strategy and business development efforts at MCI, NTT America, Sun Microsystems, Presidium, Cysive, SkyCreek Corporation, Digital Sandbox, American Management Systems and numerous others.

Prior to ShorterCycles, Mike was the President of Router Solutions, Inc. where he led a venture funded effort to introduce new service automation frameworks to the telecommunications service provider market.

Mike holds an MBA from the Robert H. Smith School of Business and an undergraduate degree in Information Management and Technology from Syracuse University.

 

Ram Gopalan - Technology Expert

Mike BorekRam Gopalan is a technology executive who has spent the first half of his career in the silicon valley working in leading companies like IBM and the later half as a serial entrepreneur who cofounded a couple of successful technology companies Cognigine, Agglut and Argusoft. He has also helped numerous entrepreneurs reach their goals as an advisor/mentor both here in the valley as well as entrepreneurs from India involved in creating companies that play on the global stage. Ram is experienced in identifying strategic directions, building teams and businesses and is currently responsible for providing the strategic vision and business development for Argusoft.

As a cofounder of Argusoft, a software company with a mission to provide technology that enables the delivery and management of healthcare and education remotely, Ram along with his brother Ravi have been focused on giving back to the community at large by leveraging technology to deliver healthcare to the underserved and remote rural areas in India and Africa. Argusoft implemented a successful (mAID) program for the prevention of transmission of AIDs from mother to child through established ART (Anti Retroviral Testing centers) in 16 states across India. Argusoft also implemented a successful program with a NGO Imtecho to empower women in villages with a mobile phone based mDOC system to identify and manage pregnant women and connect with doctors in the city to manage pregnancy complications thereby improving mortality rates and their self esteem.

Ram, Ravi and his wife Jayanti founded the Badri Foundation in India which is aimed to emulate a World Bank like service to the local Taluks in the state of Gujarat. Volunteers from abroad will get an opportunity to live in the community (taluks) and study their needs, prepare a report, identify NGOs that could help them with their needs, thus getting access to funding, to improve the quality of life in these remote areas. Ram is also on the board of US based Jhai Foundation which motivates and mentors high school students. Currently they are developing a system to improve the quality of navigation for blind folks thru a haptic feedback belt design.

Ram has been living in the California bay area since 1984 with his wife Kavita, daughters Sweta and Maya. Ram holds graduate degrees in Electrical Engineering from IIT/Delhi and UNB/Canada and an executive MBA from Stanford University.

 

Jason Offenhartz - Economics/Markets Expert

Mike BorekJason Offenhartz has a strong background in Consulting, Finance, Business Development, and Project Management. Most recently he has served as a consultant to several non-profits and tech sector start-ups.

Previously he was Director of Finance & Business Operations (employee #1) at Global Thermostat LLC, a start-up Carbon Capture & Utilization company working to commercialize its breakthrough technology.

Prior to that, Mr. Offenhartz spent seven years in banking, doing Transportation and Aerospace & Defense leveraged finance at CIT Group, and technology investment banking at SCIUS Capital. Earlier, Mr. Offenhartz was a marketing AVP and internal Strategy & Innovation leader at FleetBoston Bank (now part of Bank of America), and he began his career as a strategy consultant with the original Mitchell Madison Group in New York.

He holds an MBA from Columbia University, and a Bachelor’s degree, with honors, in Economics, Politics-Philosophy-Economics, and Environmental Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.

 

Robert Turner - Federal Markets Expert

Robert TurnerMr. Turner is a seasoned Business Development Executive with experience supporting a number of growth companies in the federal services sector. His single award capture successes include a large DoD eProcurement program and a national service desk solution for the FAA, and a Systems Engineering, Lab Support contract for NAVSEA NUWC. Additional experience includes the capture of GSA Alliant and Navy SeaPort-e; establishment of a GWAC/IDIQ Task Order Response Center to manage proposal response across multiple contract vehicles; and technical consulting for the DoD, USDA and Dept. of Education.

His career began in the Information Technology market where he was an application developer and help desk manager. He has experience in the enterprise software market as a solutions engineer, consultant and Technical Director. In addition, he is experienced in directing large enterprise solution engagements to include projects with Compaq, Phillips, and IBM as well as international engagements in the UK, Netherlands, Germany and Brazil.

Mr. Turner brings a unique ability to blend expertise across the Federal Business Development Lifecycle, integrating business growth objectives into opportunity identification, capture strategies and proposal themes that create winning, compelling technical and management proposals. Mr. Turner holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of California at Irvine.

She is a leadership coach, mentor, and a Rotarian.
